"Mary Magdalene in the Cave" (1876)

About this painting - Mary Magdalene in the Cave (1876) This work depicts Mary Magdalene, a highly controversial and tragic figure from the Bible. According to tradition, she repented and retired to the wilderness, where she lived in prayer and isolation.Lefebvre's delicate brushwork reveals her pale skin, long blonde hair, and sorrowfuexpressiofilling the painting with sadness and religious emotion.The wooden cross in the background reinforces her faith and penitence.

"La Belle Dame sans Merci"

This painting is inspired by John Keats’ 1819 poem La Belle Dame sans Merci. The story follows a knight who encounters a mysterious and enchanting fairy woman. She seduces him with her songs and love, making him fall deeply for her. However, in the end, he is abandoned, left wandering the desolate wilderness, heartbroken and lost.
